The research study, performed by Wayne State University researchers and provided at the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, depended on nasal swabs taken from hospitalized patients in Detroit between April 4 and June 5. They then evaluated all samples that had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during that time period and discovered a progressive decline in the variety of samples that were classified as having a high viral load.

” By week five of the research study, 70% of the positive samples had a preliminary low viral load” according to a news release. “This pattern in initial viral load accompanied a decrease in the percent of deaths. Almost half of the patients in the high viral load group passed away (45%) compared to 32% and 14% of the low and intermediate viral load categories respectively.”

” Exact reasons for a decline in initial viral load in time are unclear,” said Dr. El Zein, lead research study author. “A downward trend in the preliminary viral load may show a decrease in the intensity of the pandemic and patterns in the viral load values over time may represent a marker to evaluate the development of the pandemic. Quick execution of social distancing steps, lockdown and widespread usage of facemasks may have contributed to a decline in the exposure to the virus.”
The authors acknowledged that puzzling variables were not accounted for in their observations, but that the findings recommend an association between initial viral load and death.
